Molokini Crater Activity Update

Molokini as a snorkel destination is weather-dependent. A few days a year the winds are too strong and the boats go to alternate dive sites. When that happens the captain will select a different snorkel site with the safety of the passengers in mind. Many boats offer afternoon trips that cost less than the morning snorkel tours, but the afternoon trips SELDOM go to Molokini. They usually go to "Coral Gardens" which is near the tunnel along the Pali Highway between Maalaea and Lahaina. If you want to be reasonably sure you are going to Molokini, you definitely want to book a morning trip.

Most Molokini boats offer introductory scuba diving and snuba tours as additional options. Both add about $50 to the cost of the snorkel tour. Snuba is a cross between snorkeling and scuba diving. You can swim 20 feet below the surface with a regulator in your mouth. An air hose comes down from a raft that follows you around on the surface. You don't need any certification for this, and it really gives a nice introduction to scuba diving without having to wear all the gear.
