Bookings for all Maui Horseback Rides

Riding stables and working ranches are located from Kapalua in West Maui to the 10,000 foot summit of Haleakala. All will want to know your level of experience so you can be matched up with a horse that will be appropriate. If you're a beginner, they have horses just for you. If you're a veteran rider we have rides that are a bit more challenging. All rides require closed toed shoes and long pants. All in all, we can safely say that your ride here on Maui will be one of the most beautiful and fun you have ever taken. Most rides are limited to six at a time so they book up in advance, don't wait until you arrive on Maui.
NCL passenger update
NCL cruise ship passengers are able do most of the Horseback rides on second day in port in Kahului or Lahaina. When planned properly, the Mendes Ranch and Lahaina Stables afternoon rides can be done on the first day. Both ideas require a rental car, so you can drive from the cruise ship to your check-in location. You can be picked up by the rental car companies at the cruise terminal, also check with NCL to see if they have shuttle service. The Haleakala Crater check-in is about 2 hours from Lahaina. Be sure to give us a ring and we can help coordinate tours that fit into your schedule.

Haleakala on Horseback

Aloha and Welcome to Maui and Haleakala On Horseback. We offer two guided Haleakala horseback riding tours into the largest dormant volcano on earth - Haleakala. Your journey begins around 8:30am when you meet your guide at the 10,000 foot summit of Haleakala. The 5 hour Ka Mao O'Pele junction ride is $159pp and is an 8 mile ride. The 6.5 hour Kapalaoa Cabin Ride is $195pp and covers a distance of 12 miles. Windbreaker, windpants, and gloves are provided. Be prepared for extreme temperatures as it can be very cold and windy near the top of the crater, and hot on the crater floor. Eight riders maximum per trip whose minimum age is 12 and maximum weight is 230 pounds. NOTE: Effective 1/1/2007 a fee of $9 per rider will be added to cover the cost of trail maintenance and a fuel surcharge to transport horses to the summit.

Lahaina Stables

Lahaina Stables is the only company offering trail rides to Kauaula Valley and Launiupoko Valley. Here you will find incredible views of West Maui you will not see any other way but on horseback. Lahaina Stables offers a 2 hour morning ride for $110pp, a 2.5 hour lunch ride for $135pp, and a 2 hour sunset ride for $120pp. The sunset ride offers a horseback ride during a cooler part of the day as you watch the evening colors created by the horizon and the islands of Lanai and Molokai across the channel. This ride is probably the best choice for experienced riders as there is more freedom to cantor. Maximum weight is 230 pounds, with minimum age of 8 (except by special permission for experienced young riders). Lahaina Stables operates every day except Thursdays.

Mendes Ranch

With unforgettable views and friendly guides, the Mendes Ranch Trail Rides are a great choice for your Maui Activity. Mendes Ranch offers a 2 hour ride at 8:30am and 12:30pm and the cost is $110 per person. At the end of the morning ride (or the beginning of the afternoon ride) you may enjoy a western-style open pit BBQ with Alan Mendes' own marinated "Azeka-style" ribs, generous portions of rice, baked beans, potato salad, gourmet cookies, and more at a cost of $20 per person. (tours available Monday - Saturday, minimum age 7, and max weight 250 pounds)

Haleakala horseback riding Update

Many people don't realize that Hawaii has a rich cowboy tradition and that ranching is big in the islands. "Paniolo" is the Hawaiian word for cowboy. A horseback ride on Maui, provides a true history of the land and people. There's limited space with small groups, so reservations should be made well in advance of your arrival, depending on the season, allow 2 - 4 weeks.

Mendes Ranch is probably the best ride for most people. They have stunning ocean views from their ranch which is nestled at the top of a 1,000 foot bluff along the north shore of the West Maui Mountains. You ride from the upper ranch down a gently sloping trail that leads all the way to the ocean and then back again. This ride has a slow enough pace for beginners who have never been on a horse before, but there are one or two places where the more experienced can cantor for short distances.

The amazing views from Haleakala Crater, make it one of the favorite horseback tours on Maui. The scenery is just stunning, and you'll feel like you are riding on the surface of the moon. We suggest booking the shorter junction ride as the cabin ride is less popular, unless you're an experienced rider. Even if you book the longer cabin ride, there's a good chance that the rest of the people who reserve the tour for your date will want the shorter ride, and they only do one trip per day.

Lahaina Stables certainly has a convenient location close to Lahaina town, especially for cruise passengers. When riding their horses you will feel in total control, they seem to be the most responsive and behaved of any ranch in Hawaii. The Lahaina Stables location is usually HOT during the day, but they also offer a sunset ride, which provides for a cooler ride. The views coming back down at the end of the ride at sunset can be stunning.
