Hawaiian legend says the goddess Pele gave volcanic birth to the Hawaiian Islands. The Big Island was the last andlargest child, still growing and receiving much of the attention today. Its most active volcano, Kilauea, still sends lava into the ocean to this day, forming new land, and is considered by many to be a most sacred site. However, volcanoes are only part of the naturally awesome landscape. With 11 of the 13 climate zones in the world, it’s possible to go from snow-covered mountains to warm, sunny beaches in just an hour’s drive. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is one of many Big Island beaches made from ground lava, but perhaps one of the most beautiful. You’ll find that many Hawaiian sea turtles think so, too. Also on your tour is quaint Kailua-Kona Town with its shops and restaurants lining both sides of the street. The Kona coast itself may be bestappreciated from a cruise boat, in which case you’ll want to look into Captain Beans’ Cruises.
